Gladstone
Hotel Gallery - June 7th, 2008
The Katz family and the Friends of Charles Katz hosted a week
long retrospective at the Gladstone Hotel. The second floor
Ballroom was filled to capacity with some of Charles’
best works from all parts of his career. Additional rooms were
required to exhibit paintings that had never been seen before.
These untitled canvases, which Charles was secretly working
on in the last years of his life, revealed a powerful change
in direction for the artist. Another room was dedicated to portfolios
of drawings, his irreverent photography, and strange, curious
and charming ephemera.
The exhibition was launched with an opening night reception
that drew people form all across Ontario, in some cases as far
away as Vancouver. Over the course of the evening over 300 hundred
people – artists, friends, collectors, poets, strangers,
children and family - participated in the event and paid tribute
to Charles and his life. The video on this page captures the
spirit of the retrospective.
